Maisel is the latest longterm Brooklyn politician to back Gounardes’ campaign to unseat Republican incumbent Marty Golden

BROOKLYN, NY: Today, NY City Council Member Alan N. Maisel gave his official endorsement to Andrew Gounardes, Democrat for NY Senate. Maisel is the most recent in a string of endorsements for Gounardes, whose campaign is rapidly gathering petitions ahead of party primaries.

Maisel, who currently represents the 46th Council District, was previously a New York senator, a Chief of Staff for Congressman Chuck Schumer and, before that, a teacher and Assistant Principal. His long record of community service and leadership makes his endorsement a powerful one.

“By now, I have a pretty good idea of who is the real deal, and who’s a pretender,” Maisel said. “And there is nothing pretend about Andrew Gounardes. He is the state senator Southern Brooklyn deserves, and needs.”

“Andrew will bring a fresh, anti-establishment voice to Albany,” Maisel added. “I believe he will make a huge difference in the Senate — and that starts with flipping the chamber back to Democratic control.”

Currently, Republicans hold sway over the NY Senate; if Gounardes can defeat Republican Marty Golden, however, the Democrats will be in the driver’s seat for the first time in years.

“I realize how important this is,” Gounardes said. “And I couldn’t be more grateful to Council Member Maisel, whose example inspires me to work harder every day for my community.”

Like Maisel, Gounardes is a lifelong Brooklyn resident who has dedicated himself to improving the lives of his neighbors.

“For decades, Alan Maisel has made a positive impact on others,” Gounardes said. “I want to make the same kind of difference for my fellow Brooklynites and Americans.”

In addition to Maisel, Gounardes has received endorsements from: the United Auto Workers of America (UAW), the Communications Workers of America (CWA), former City Council Member Vincent Gentile, Assembly Member Peter Abbate, the Brooklyn Young Democrats, the Central Brooklyn Independent Democrats, the Southern Brooklyn Democrats, the Stars & Stripes Democratic Club, the Chair of the Kings County Democrats and Run for Something.

Gounardes is an attorney and community advocate running for the State Senate in the 22nd District, which includes Bay Ridge, Dyker Heights, Bensonhurst, Marine Park, Gerritsen Beach, and Gravesend, as well as portions of of Sheepshead Bay, Borough Park, and Midwood. He is graduate of Fort Hamilton High School, Hunter College and the George Washington University Law School. He serves as Counsel to Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams, was an aide to former Council Member Vincent Gentile, and served on Community Board 10. You can read more at
