Former NY City Council Member Fidler gives Gounardes his 12th endorsement — before the Democratic Party has even held its primary

BROOKLYN, NY: Today, former NY City Council Member Lewis A. Fidler officially endorsed Andrew Gounardes’ campaign for the NY Senate seat currently held by Republican Marty Golden. Fidler, like many other local leaders and organizations, is rallying around Gounardes as the choice for change in Southern Brooklyn and Albany.

“I wish Andrew Gounardes could start a term in the Senate tomorrow,” Fidler said. “He would be such a huge upgrade for the district. Community initiatives that aren’t moving forward, tax breaks and kickbacks going to the rich, unsafe streets and underfunded education — Andrew would immediately change all that.”

Fidler served the City Council’s 46th District from 2002 to 2013, a decade of service to Southern Brooklyn which makes him more than qualified to weigh in on the community’s needs.

“We’re tired of Marty Golden,” Fidler said. “All this time he’s been in office, and what do we have to show for it?”

“Andrew Gounardes is a breath of fresh air that will make a huge difference for the people of Brooklyn.”

Gounardes doesn’t take Fidler’s support lightly. “To have Lew Fidler’s endorsement means a ton,” he said. “Lew is a respected leader in this community, and someone I look up to. I intend to do everything I can to honor his vote of confidence.”

For Gounardes, Fidler’s endorsement makes 12 overall. Previously, City Council Member Alan Maisel, the United Auto Workers of America (UAW), the Communications Workers of America (CWA), former City Council Member Vincent Gentile, Assembly Member Peter Abbate, the Brooklyn Young Democrats, the Central Brooklyn Independent Democrats, the Southern Brooklyn Democrats, the Stars & Stripes Democratic Club, the Chair of the Kings County Democrats and Run for Something all pledged their support to Gounardes’ campaign.

“This is exciting,” Gounardes said. “We’re just starting to collect petitions for the primary — to have 12 endorsements at this point tells me that people are behind our campaign, and we’re building the kind of grassroots support that we need. I’m pumped.”

Gounardes is an attorney and community advocate running for the State Senate in the 22nd District, which includes Bay Ridge, Dyker Heights, Bensonhurst, Marine Park, Gerritsen Beach, and Gravesend, as well as portions of of Sheepshead Bay, Borough Park, and Midwood. He is graduate of Fort Hamilton High School, Hunter College and the George Washington University Law School. He serves as Counsel to Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams, was a former aide to Councilmember Vincent Gentile, and served on Community Board 10. You can read more at
