BROOKLYN, NY, July 6, 2018 -- Today, City Council Member Mark Treyger officially endorsed Andrew Gounardes for the NY Senate in District 22, citing Andrew’s record of service to the community, his focus on improving pedestrian safety, mass transit, and public schools, and his commitment to champion the full array of diverse voices and communities across Southern Brooklyn.

“I’m proud to endorse Andrew Gounardes for State Senate, because his record of public service demonstrates that he is the advocate that Southern Brooklyn needs in Albany,” said Treyger. “As a former teacher and Chair of the City Council’s Committee on Education, I know that Andrew will fight to give our schools the resources they need to make sure that all kids can succeed. He’ll fight for pedestrian safety and speed cameras that keep our streets safe. Andrew has a long record of activism on behalf of our communities, and I am confident that he will serve Southern Brooklyn well in Albany.”

Treyger represents the 47th Council District, which overlaps considerably with the 22nd Senate district, including the neighborhoods of Bensonhurst and Gravesend.

For Gounardes, Treyger’s endorsement is significant. Treyger is also the Democratic District Leader and State Committeeman for the 46th Assembly District and, prior to being elected to the City Council, was a public school teacher and an active member of the United Federation of Teachers.

“Mark Treyger’s endorsement means an incredible amount.” Gounardes said. “He is someone who has dedicated his life to public service--first to the students of New Utrecht High School, and now to the residents of his district. He understands that people come before politics, and I look forward to working alongside him to make Southern Brooklyn better for all its residents.”

Gounardes has already been endorsed by SEIU 32BJ, the local chapter of United Automobile Workers, the District 1 chapter of Communications Workers of America, Former Council Member Vincent Gentile, Assembly Member Peter Abbate, Lambda Independent Democrats of Brooklyn, Bay Ridge Democrats, the Brooklyn Young Democrats, the Central Brooklyn Independent Democrats, the Southern Brooklyn Democrats, the Stars & Stripes Democratic Club, the Chairperson of the Kings County Democrats Frank Seddio and Run for Something.
