United Auto Workers’ (UAW) and The Communications Workers of America (CWA) endorsements are the first two labor endorsements in the Democratic primary for the District 22 State Senate seat

BROOKLYN, NY: Today, the local chapter of the International Union of United Automobile, Aerospace and Agricultural Implement Workers of America (UAW), as well as the District 1 chapter of the Communications Workers of America (CWA) formally endorsed Democrat Andrew Gounardes in his bid to become Southern Brooklyn’s next state senator. Because these are the first unions to endorse a candidate in the District 22 Democratic primary, this is an important double win for the Gounardes campaign.

The UAW Region 9A NY Community Action Program (CAP) endorsed Gounardes because, as Director Julie Kushner said, “Of all the candidates in this race, Andrew Gounardes is the one we trust when it comes to his support for organized labor.  He is committed to making life better for workers and he has proven to us that he knows that strong unions mean strong families and a better economy.”

She added, “Our members and communities deserve real change that will translates into workers having a voice at work, equal pay for women, quality public education for all children, better access to quality healthcare and investment in infrastructure and clean energy. We want to send the best to represent our values to Albany, and that is why we support Andrew Gounardes to be our next State Senator.”

CWA District 1 Vice-President Dennis Trainor echoed this opinion. “As a community advocate, Andrew Gounardes has proven himself to be a strong supporter for New York’s working families, and his commitment to helping grow the middle class by supporting living wage standards and establishing a progressive tax structure to make sure that everyone is paying their fair share is why we’re proud to endorse his campaign for New York State Senate.”

He added, “We need a State legislature that works for our members and their families, and electing Andrew Gounardes is a vital part of ensuring that we can get the work done in Albany to strengthen our communities.”

CWA District 1 represents communications workers in eight East Coast states, and its parent organization has more than 700,000 national members who work in telecommunications, IT, air travel, media, healthcare, public service, manufacturing, law enforcement and other related fields.

Gounardes understands the union members’ concerns and frustrations with the status quo of recent years, and he’s working to change it.

"From fair union elections to collective bargaining, occupational safety and health, tax and budget fairness and education, our union members have tons of needs that are not being met,” Gounardes said.

“Rather than working with our unions, Marty Golden and our ‘leaders’ in Albany have been busy enriching themselves. We’ve all been paying for it — and it needs to stop.”

While UAW and CWA are Gounardes’ first two union endorsements, they are his ninth and tenth endorsements overall. Former Council Member Vincent Gentile, Assembly Member Peter Abbate, the Brooklyn Young Democrats, the Central Brooklyn Independent Democrats, the Southern Brooklyn Democrats, the Stars & Stripes Democratic Club, the Chairperson of the Kings County Democrats Frank Seddio and Run for Something have all officially supported Gounardes’ campaign, which is building momentum as the primary season approaches.
