Keeping Kids Safe Online

As the father of three young kids, Andrew’s top priority is keeping our children safe, especially from threats online. 

To do that, he’s stood up to Big Tech and won—repeatedly. 

The research is clear: social media is fueling a youth mental health crisis. Teens who use social media over three hours each day face twice the risk of depression and anxiety. One study found that, amongst young girls, the correlation between mental health struggles and social media use was stronger than the links to binge drinking, sexual assault, or hard drug use.

Social media companies are profiting off this crisis: Platforms like Instagram and Tiktok made nearly $11 billion in ad revenue just from users under 18 each year. 

In response, Andrew led a bipartisan campaign and defeated a million-dollar lobbying effort by Big Tech to pass the SAFE for Kids Act and the New York Child Data Protection Act, first-in-the-nation laws to protect children and teens from addictive algorithms and exploitative data collection on social media.

Then, he built on those wins by passing legislation to mandate social media warning labels as well as the Stop Online Predators Act/Safe By Design Act, which protects kids from exploitation on sites like Roblox. He also passed the RAISE Act to regulate dangerous AI, a moratorium on AI chatbot toys, and the CREEP Act to support survivors of digital harassment like cyberstalking, revenge porn, doxxing and deep fakes.

Andrew’s fight to build a safer, better internet is far from over. Now, he’s working to ensure Big Tech can’t take over our schools. After winning a bell-to-bell ban on smartphones in schools, Andrew recently introduced the FOCUS Act, legislation that would create comprehensive, age-appropriate restrictions on tech in schools by regulating the use of screens, AI, and other “ed tech” devices to ensure kids’ education comes before the profits of tech corporations.
