What I am Fighting For

Street
Safety
Everywhere

In New York, the unquestioned popularity of urban spaces such as Riverside Park, the High Line, Brooklyn Bridge Park and others has demonstrated the incredible drawing power and civic value these public areas can have. And although Southern Brooklyn doesn’t currently possess such a space, I want to change that.

There is so much more we must do to make sure that our city is safe and accessible for pedestrians, straphangers, cyclists and motorists. No one should live in fear of crossing the street or live in transit deserts where they can’t get to work.

Southern Brooklyn is starved for reliable public transit.  Our subway and bus service is at an all-time low, subway stations are inaccessible and literally falling apart-- yet fares continue to rise. You can check out my transit report which demonstrates how the transit woes of southern Brooklyn have tangibly affected our economy, our wellbeing, and our quality of life.  Our community needs and deserves better.

Noise pollution and dangerous driving is a problem all over New York, and needs to stop. A car zooms by sounding like it has a jet engine attached to its back, or a muffler that backfires like a machine gun. These illegally modified vehicles wreak havoc on our quality of life, keep us up at all hours of the night, and make our streets more dangerous these vehicle owners speed their way across our streets.

In New York, the unquestioned popularity of urban spaces has demonstrated the incredible drawing power and civic value these public areas can have.My vision is to create a Narrows Waterfront Park that quickly becomes one of Southern Brooklyn’s most beloved landmarks — a destination for visitors, a gathering-place for residents and a source of pride for all New Yorkers.

I will always fight to improve pedestrian and cyclist safety across our city, to make sure that everyone feels safe using our shared roadways that reflect the realities of how people are getting around. No one should live in fear of crossing the street, or riding their bicycle to and from their destination.  Our roadways aren’t the only way to get around: mass transit is the lifeblood of our city and we deserve nothing less than a system that is accessible, reliable, and accountable to all. And of course, what better way to travel our streets or take transit than to enjoy open green spaces and parkland? Working with our neighbors, I'm committed to building a new Narrows Waterfront Park that will be the crown jewel of Southern Brooklyn.
